Balance the Doshas with Yoga- This is part of the sister science to yoga- ayurveda. The energy in the body is described by the interplay of the universal elements of air, fire, water, earth, and ether. According to ayurveda, how these elements interact with each other creates patterns called doshas. Doshas are affected by diet and lifestyle. In yoga we can offer asana and pranayama practices designed to complement the balance of dosha.

Balance the Doshas with Yoga- Pitta Balancing
Pitta arises from fire and creates the head that governs digestion, absorption, metabolism, and transformation in the body and mind. In balance, Pitta is a source of intelligence and understanding, helping us discriminate between right and wrong. Excessive pitta leads to anger and hatred.
Pittas tend to push hard, a very competitive personality, and like hot, vigorous yoga practices. To find balance, look for cooling, nurturing, and relaxing yoga practices. Pitta types benefit from a longer pauses after strong sequences while remaining mindful of relaxing and letting go of tension. Go slow and move deeply!

Balance Vata with Yoga
Vata arises from air and ether and governs breathing, the flow of blood, muscle and tissue movement, and movement of thoughts in the mind. When vata is in good balance, it is a source of creativity, enthusiasm, and flexibility. With too much vata, we become fearful, worrisome, and prone to insomnia.
Vata types benefit from exploring yoga poses more gradually and steadily, focusing more on grounding in standing and balancing poses, and lingering longer in deep asana.

Balance Kapha with Yoga
Kapha is formed from earth and water and creates the body’s physical structure of bones, muscles, and tendons. Kapha lubricates the joints, moisturizes the skin, and helps to heal wounds. Kapha is expressed as love, compassion, and calmness. Out of balance, it creates lethargy and envy.
Kaphas benefit most from a warming and flowing practice to stimulate metabolism and circulation. Start with simple flowing sequences to further warm the body and keep energy flowing. Then move into sustained asana sequences that require strength and stamina. Heart opening asanas can further stimulate circulation. Back bending poses to balance the doshas with yoga lead to a clearer, active mind.
